MANUFACTURING

Designed and Built the UMD Way

UMD is a UK manufacturer of perimeter security systems, designing and building gates, barriers, road blockers, turnstiles, height restrictors and access control products for trade customers across the UK.

Our manufacturing approach is built around control, consistency and accountability. By keeping key processes in-house, we are able to manage the details that directly affect product quality — from design and fabrication through to automation, finishing, assembly, testing and technical support.

This is a central part of The UMD Way.

We do not design products in isolation from how they will be installed, commissioned, maintained or supported. Every product is developed with the full life of the system in mind, helping installers work more efficiently and giving end users confidence in long-term performance.

Our manufacturing process is not just about producing steel or aluminium products. It is about building reliable perimeter security systems that are designed properly from the start, manufactured with care, and supported by people who understand how the products perform in the real world.

Fabrication

Fabrication is where the strength of a UMD product begins.

Our gates, barriers, turnstiles, road blockers and access control products are manufactured with a focus on accuracy, rigidity and long-term durability. Every frame, post, channel, bracket and component has a role to play in how the finished system performs once it reaches site.

We design and manufacture with installation in mind. That means considering fixing points, alignment, access, handling, serviceability and the practical realities faced by installers and engineers.

From robust steel construction to modern aluminium gate systems, our fabrication process is built around repeatability, control and attention to detail. The aim is simple: to produce products that are strong, consistent, and ready to perform in demanding environments.

Automation

Automation is built into the UMD process from the start.

Our products are developed so that the mechanical structure, drive system, control panel, safety devices and installation requirements work together as one complete system. This helps create products that are easier to install, easier to commission and easier to support once they are on site.

Where possible, we build consistency across our control systems and drive arrangements, helping installers work more confidently across the UMD range.

For us, automation is not an afterthought. It is part of the way the product is designed, manufactured, tested and supported. That approach helps reduce unnecessary complexity, improve reliability and give trade customers confidence in the products they are installing.

Finishing

A product’s finish is more than how it looks. It is part of its long-term performance.

UMD’s in-house finishing capability gives us greater control over preparation, coverage, consistency and final presentation. This supports a more reliable process and helps ensure that products leave the factory with a durable, professional finish suited to external environments.

By managing finishing in-house, we reduce handovers, improve accountability and maintain tighter control over the final appearance of the product.

The finish is the final visible stage of the manufacturing process, but it reflects the care taken throughout — from design and fabrication through to preparation, coating, assembly and dispatch.

Quality control

Quality control is built into each stage of the UMD manufacturing process.

Before a product leaves our factory, key mechanical, electrical and safety elements are checked and reviewed. Final assembly brings the full system together, including the structure, automation, controls, safety devices and operating features.

Our aim is to give installers confidence before the product reaches site. A UMD product should arrive as a properly considered system, not a collection of parts that leaves the installer to solve avoidable problems during installation.

That is why testing, review and accountability are central to The UMD Way. We design it properly, build it reliably, check it thoroughly and support it with the knowledge of the people who made it.

Why In-house manufacturing matters

In-house manufacturing matters

Keeping key manufacturing processes in-house gives UMD greater control over the things that matter most to trade customers: product quality, consistency, lead time control, technical knowledge and accountability.

It also allows our teams to work more closely together. Design, fabrication, automation, finishing, assembly and technical support are not separate ideas – they are connected parts of the same process.

When those teams work together, products improve. Details are refined. Installation becomes easier. Support becomes more informed. Feedback from site can be reviewed and built back into future product development.

That is the benefit of in-house manufacturing: better control, better communication and a stronger final product.

Faster lead times

By keeping core processes under our own control, we are able to manage production more effectively and respond more confidently to customer requirements.

In-house manufacturing helps reduce reliance on multiple external suppliers and gives us greater visibility over scheduling, priorities and progress.

For trade customers, this means clearer communication, better control and a more dependable supply process.

Consistent quality

Consistency is one of the biggest advantages of the UMD manufacturing approach.

When products are designed, fabricated, finished, assembled and tested through controlled internal processes, quality becomes easier to manage and repeat.

Every product is built to a defined standard, with the same focus on strength, reliability, finish and practical installation. That consistency helps installers know what to expect from UMD products and gives customers confidence that the product has been built properly.

Custom capabilities

Every site is different, and not every project can be solved with a standard product. Because UMD designs and manufactures in-house, we are able to support bespoke requirements, non-standard dimensions, project-specific finishes and tailored product configurations. Customisation is handled with the same principles as our standard range: the product must remain practical to manufacture, practical to install, reliable in operation and supportable over the long term. Our approach allows flexibility without losing control of the details that matter.

Accountability

When you work with UMD, you are dealing with the people behind the product.

Our teams understand how the products are designed, manufactured, assembled, tested and supported. That knowledge matters when customers need technical advice, specification guidance, installation support or product information.

In-house manufacturing gives us ownership of the process and accountability for the result.

We believe that is important. Trade customers need a manufacturer they can speak to, rely on and work with — not a supplier disconnected from the product it sells.

Built for the most demanding environments

UMD products are designed and manufactured for real-world commercial, industrial and high-security environments.

From busy vehicle entrances and logistics sites to secure pedestrian access points and controlled perimeter systems, our products are built with strength, reliability and serviceability in mind.
Demanding environments need products that are more than visually suitable. They need systems that are properly designed, robustly manufactured, practical to install and capable of being supported throughout their working life.

That is why our manufacturing approach is closely linked to product design and technical support. We consider how the product will be used, how it will be accessed, how it will be maintained and how it will perform over time.

This is the UMD Way: build for the environment, design for the installer, and support the product beyond dispatch.

Intelligent control technology

Reliable automation depends on more than individual components. It depends on how the complete system is designed, built, configured and supported.

UMD products are developed so that control systems, drive arrangements and safety devices work together as part of a complete access solution. This helps support smoother commissioning, clearer diagnostics and more reliable long-term operation.

Where possible, we build commonality across our product range, making it easier for installers and engineers to understand, commission and maintain UMD systems.

Our control approach is practical and installer-focused. The aim is to make products easier to work with on site, easier to diagnose when support is needed, and more consistent across the range.

By considering controls and automation at the design stage, we help remove unnecessary complexity and create products that are easier to install, support and maintain.

Supporting You Beyond Delivery

Comprehensive support, from specification to service life

Manufacturing does not stop when the product leaves the factory.

UMD supports trade customers throughout the full product journey – from specification and product selection through to installation, commissioning, servicing and ongoing technical support.

Because we design and manufacture the products ourselves, our support is grounded in genuine product knowledge. We understand the structure, the controls, the safety systems, the installation requirements and the common questions that can arise on site.

That gives installers a stronger support route and gives customers confidence that UMD remains involved beyond delivery.

Technical support

Our technical support is built around practical product knowledge.

We can support customers with product selection, specification queries, control system guidance, integration questions and general technical advice.

Where issues arise, our aim is to help customers reach the right answer quickly and clearly. Because our team understands how the products are designed and built, support can be more direct, more informed and more useful to engineers on site.

Installation support

UMD products are designed with installation in mind from the beginning.

Our focus is on practical details that help reduce avoidable site difficulties: clear fixing methods, accessible service points, considered control locations, consistent automation arrangements and product designs that support efficient commissioning.

We can provide installation information, technical guidance and product-specific support to help trade customers install and commission UMD systems with confidence.

The goal is simple: products that arrive ready to install, with support available when it is needed.

Training

Training is an important part of building confidence across the UMD product range.

We support trade customers and engineers with product knowledge, installation guidance, control system understanding, fault-finding and maintenance awareness.

This helps installers become more familiar with UMD systems and supports better outcomes on site.

Our training approach is practical, product-focused and built around real-world use. It is designed to help engineers understand not just what to do, but why the product has been designed that way.

Maintenance & spares

Long-term product support is an important part of the UMD manufacturing approach.

Our products are designed with serviceability in mind, helping engineers access, maintain and support systems more efficiently throughout their working life.

We also understand the importance of spare parts availability and clear product knowledge when a site needs support. By manufacturing and supporting our own range, we are better placed to help customers identify the right parts and keep systems operating reliably.

For UMD, support does not end at dispatch. It continues through installation, operation, maintenance and future product development.

Safety by Design

Safety is considered from the start of the design process.

UMD products are developed so that mechanical design, automation, controls and safety systems work together as a complete solution. This helps ensure that safety is built into the product rather than treated as an afterthought.

From safety edges and photocell protection to control logic, force management and commissioning support, our approach is focused on creating products that are practical to install and safe to operate when correctly specified, installed and maintained.

We continually review our products in line with current guidance, legislation and industry best practice, working to ensure that UMD systems remain robust, reliable and suitable for the environments they are designed for.

Safety by design is a core part of The UMD Way: considered early, built properly, tested thoroughly and supported with real product knowledge.
